Do you have always gravitated towards your schools chemistry and biology classes? Do you want to learn even more about the fascinating world of macromolecules? Start studying molecular Biotechnology at TU Munich!
In biotechnology microorganisms are used to produce important biomolecules on a daily basis. For example important antibodies for future vaccines. Such a drug played a major role in Africas fight against Ebola: ZMapp. Those therapeutic proteins are generated in California using tobacco plants, the used method for antibody-production originally comes from the german company Icon Genetics GmbH based in Halle (Saale).
Molecular Biotechnology focuses on biochemical pathways and metabolisms of organisms like bacteria and plants (e.g. tobacco) and ways to alter their genetic information for efficient production of a specific molecule.
Traditional Biotechnology adresses production mostly from a process engineering point of view, focusing on generating biomolecules in big scale bioreactors. Right now, in the age of genetics its ways and technologies are introduced to make the cells themselves more efficient, improving their biosynthetic performance. Targeted genetic changes can achieve higher yields at a lower cost, making development, production and distribution as efficient and fast as possible.
Being able to push even further requires a wide knowledge about organisms, their metabolism and biomolecules, provided by the Molecular Biotechnology Studies at TUM.

Zoology, plant sciences, genetics, microbiology, cell biology! What more does a biologist want? In addition to these subjects and the associated internships, the Bachelor of Biology at TUM also includes the basic natural science subjects. In addition to Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry and Statistics are also taught. Here again with exercises and internships. After these admittedly stressful first 4 semesters, you are a fully trained natural science canon and ready to go to school. 5. and 6th semester up to the bachelor thesis specialize independently. The basic internships and exercises are generally well supervised and the working atmosphere by small groups of usually 2-3 people is very productive and relaxed.

If you decide to study the master's degree with us at TUM,
almost all specialization opportunities
that you can find in biology are open to you - that's why the master's degree program is also (only) called biology. From the fields of Biochemistry/Cell Biology, Genetics, Medical
Biology, Microbiology, Ecology, Plant Sciences and Zoology/Animal Sciences, you can select 3-4 fields as your focuses.
The range of lectures and (research) internships is large and is regularly updated. Here too, the support provided by the chairs is excellent and the link between TUM and the MPI, Helmholtz Zentrum and Klinikum Rechts der Isar provides a wide range of insights into research and future professional life.

Alternative Biological Technical Assistant (BTA):
The number of apprentices to the BTA is steadily decreasing, even though it is a state-recognised laboratory profession. The resulting shortage of skilled workers is already noticeable in the free economy. The advantages are:
- Academic achievements shorten the duration of the training
- The increasing shortage of skilled workers guarantees almost full employment of the BTA
- In spite of premature completion of studies, the possibility of scientific work remains
- For students with previous education, the drop-out rate falls below 1% according to the university of the employment agency
For example, the Landau Science Center offers such a change.
